Studying Together: Esther

“Clothed with Purpose”

“…and who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” – Esther 4:14

The Book of Esther, no doubt, tells one of the most favourite Bible stories of every little girl. What little girl doesn’t read with glee to put herself in the place of beautiful and favoured Queen Esther? Perhaps she was one of your favourites, too!

As we grow in age and maturity, however, our perspective as we read that beautiful Old Testament book might evoke another set of emotions altogether. What we may have overlooked as a youth, we see clearly through the lens of our own life experiences. We are likely not so quick to want to jump into Esther’s shoes when we realize the great struggles she surely faced.

Though the narrative only spans a few chapters, thankfully, we can see the process of Esther’s situation and hopefully, find ourselves once again desiring to be like her. First to note, is that Esther understood the importance of a wardrobe. When her cousin Mordecai was grieved and wearing sackcloth, she sent him a change of clothes (4:1-4). (We will see just how fully she understands the power of a wardrobe change in just a few verses.) Second to be noticed is that while Esther was in a good place, living in the palace, she still had challenges. She could have easily allowed her challenges to become excuses (4:11).

After the beautiful encouragement that comes in verse fourteen, we find an extraordinary moment that delivers encouragement to us still today. Chapter five opens with these words:

“Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel…”

Ooh! I can just imagine it, can’t you? But something even more amazing happened before she changed her wardrobe. Esther set her mind in order (4:16).

“…if I perish, I perish”.

A mindset change determines the wardrobe change. As she took on faith and boldness, she put on her royal apparel for the important work she was called to do.

My dear sister, let us also be filled with faith and boldness, put our mind in order and put on the robe of our royal calling! We are living in the greatest hour of the church! We have purpose greater than our challenges; we have been called to the Kingdom!

Leading Together: Seasons

The third chapter of Ecclesiastes famously begins with the following passage: “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” How true! We see the passing of time even now, as temperatures turn cooler and autumn descends upon us. Here in Finland, the days are growing shorter, and the leaves are beginning to change color. Each season brings its own activities. Summer is marked by picnics and days in the warm sun; autumn brings thoughts of cozy sweaters and big cups of tea.

Just as each season in nature has its own characteristics, our churches and ministries also experience different kinds of seasons. There are times of great activity and growth, and other times of rest and reflection. The key is to recognize the season: What is the current focus? What needs stand out right now? What topics need to be taught? What challenges are being faced? Our pastors can give us direction and wisdom regarding the changing seasons within the church. When we combine their guidance with our own personal prayer and seeking of God’s will, the Lord shows us how to walk and act in this new time. He may not lay everything out for us in exact detail, but He will provide what we need to fulfill His will. Matthew 6:33 reminds us: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

God’s timing is perfect. Just as every season in nature has its purpose, so do the seasons in the church. Where is He leading your women’s ministry? Where is He leading your personal ministry? How will He grow you in this next season? What lessons, battles, and victories lie ahead? Just as we watch with open eyes for His return, we should also remain alert to His will for the days ahead. Whatever this season may hold, God sees every moment and has a plan. Embrace what He has in store, and watch Him reveal His glory!

Meeting Together: A Wardrobe Change

Autumn is creeping in upon us and it brings along cooler temperatures. This is the time of year when it can be difficult to know how to dress. Will it be a warm day or a cool day? Do we look for lighter cotton clothes or something a little heavier to give more warmth? You may already be putting your summer clothes in storage and taking out warmer things, depending on where you live.

I personally enjoy the change of season because it means a change in wardrobe. It means pulling out something I haven’t worn for several months and it almost feels like I get to wear something new.

Our theme for this issue, “A Wardrobe Change,” seems appropriate for women. I do believe most of us like buying something new to wear, and some of us look for a special occasion as an excuse to do so. This theme is a great idea for an Autumn ladies meeting.

Scriptures:

There are many Scriptures that could be used for a devotional. Some of them are: Ephesians 4:22-24; Ephesians 6:13; Romans 13:14; Colossians 3:8-10; Galatians 3:27; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Deuteronomy 22:5; I Timothy 2:9; I Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 31:25; Colossians 3:1-14; Deuteronomy 8:4.

Here are some suggested Devotional Titles you could choose from:

  • Take off the old man (woman) and put on the new
  • Clothed in God’s Armor
  • A Wardrobe for a Woman of God
  • A Forever Wardrobe

As an added activity, you could invite the ladies to bring a piece of clothing they are no longer wearing and have a clothing exchange, or collect clothing to donate to a woman’s shelter in your area. You could also have a fashion show! Have your ladies dress up and walk the aisle showing off their godly, modest clothing!

Have fun with it! Send us some pictures and tell us about your event! We would love to hear from you.

A Change in Season, a Change in Clothing

Autumn leaves, cool breeze and the smell of cinnamon and baked apples in the air! There is nothing better than getting up on the crisp mornings, putting on a pair of boots and a warm wool cardigan. Growing up in the Scotland, the seasons merged and even sometimes all in one day! I’ve come to appreciate the distinct seasons of Eastern Europe.

A new season represents change and new elements. Personally, it brings me joy to take my worn-out summer sandals and trade them in for a pair of brown boots. We all can appreciate a change in our wardrobe! We can enjoy the new colours, new weather and new perspective.

Isaiah 61:3 (ESV) states, “to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.”

It’s God’s desire to give us a brand-new wardrobe! It’s easy to look at our circumstances now and just “accept it” as the norm. The verse tells us clearly that God wants to dress us in beauty. We can have access to the Great designer’s lasted brand.

  • “Beautiful headdress instead of ashes” – We can have our minds clothed in beauty and purity.
  • “The oil of gladness instead of mourning” – We can be filled with fresh oil, His Spirit and full of great joy.
  • “The garment of praise instead of a faint spirit” – We can have thankfulness deep within our hearts.

These new garments are not to bring attention to us but to give all glory and honour to Him. God desires for us to be made whole in Him. We can replace the feelings of despair with joyful praise and a renewed spirit.

So, if you’re tired of your “old clothes”, it’s time for a wardrobe change! Jesus, the Greatest Designer, knows exactly what you need!
